Augsburg Launches a New Bike-Sharing Service as Fifteen Makes a Strong Entry into the German Market

Fifteen
The city of Augsburg has taken a major step toward sustainable mobility by launching its brand-new bike-sharing service with Fifteen. As of now, 700 standard bikes are ready for Augsburg's residents, with an additional 300 Fifteen e-bikes set to hit the streets in early 2025. Fifteen is not only providing the cutting-edge technology behind the bikes and the user-friendly app, but this launch also marks our exciting debut in the German market. Stadtwerke Augsburg (SWA) is managing the daily operations, making this partnership a perfect blend of innovation and local expertise.

Augsburg: Pioneering a New Era of Bike-Sharing

Since 2012, Augsburg has been a trailblazer in cycling, consistently investing in bicycle infrastructure to make the city a haven for cyclists. Certified as a bicycle-friendly city by the Bavarian State Ministry of the Interior, Augsburg has laid the groundwork for a true transformation. By integrating the new bike-sharing system, Augsburg isn’t just adding convenience—it’s shaping the future of urban mobility. The goal? To massively increase cycling’s share in daily commutes, whether for quick trips across town or in combination with other forms of transport, all while dramatically reducing CO2 emissions by 55% by 2030.

To this end, we are gradually procuring a modern fleet of rental bikes, which will already be larger at the start of operations than was last in use in the city area at the end of 2023. Thanks to a comprehensive location concept developed by SWA together with the city of Augsburg, a large number of locations will ensure high availability throughout the city.

Fifteen: Flexibility, Sustainability, and Ambition

Replacing an outdated mechanical bike fleet, Fifteen introduces a game-changing, future-proof bike-sharing solution. With 1,000 European-made, high-quality bicycles available across 700 stations, users now enjoy the ultimate freedom to move around the city with ease and flexibility. The fleet offers both mechanical and electric bikes, each connected through a single app for a seamless experience.

Fifteen’s Bold Entry into the German Market

Entering the German market with such an ambitious public bike-sharing service is a proud moment for us. After successful launches in Spain and Italy, Europe is clearly showing its appetite for cycling mobility, and initiatives like the Social Climate Fund will further accelerate this momentum. Our vision is to make 15-minute cities a reality across Europe and the world.

CEO of Fifteen

Data-Driven Future

Beyond simply providing bikes, Fifteen is helping Augsburg plan smarter, safer streets. With user consent, anonymized data from the bike-sharing network will be harnessed to improve cycling infrastructure—mapping out popular routes, assessing bike lane conditions, and alerting the city to potential hazards. Over time, this partnership promises to boost safety for cyclists and further integrate the bike-sharing network with public transport.

A Fleet Built for the Future

Our mechanical bike is the result of 15 years' bike-sharing experience. It features the traditional easy-handling and robustness of a shared bike, but is equipped with the latest IoT - making for a clever, economical bike-sharing option, and a great complement to electric bikes.

In Augsburg, it is combined with the market-leading Fusion electric bike. With a carefully crafted common identity extending from the basket to the rear mudguard, the service is highly recognizable.

Fifteen’s Fusion model leads the fleet—a lightweight electric bike designed for urban journeys, with a low frame, a 5-litre basket for essentials, and smart features like an automatic torque sensor and RFID technology for easy unlocking. Safety is top priority with an integrated alarm, engine lock, and GPS tracking, while onboard sensors monitor speed, stop times, and vibrations, giving cities valuable insights to improve infrastructure.
